META Program FAQs
Q: Will insurance cover the META Program?
A: This is a specialized seminar that will help you understand your results, what they mean to your health goals and how to improve them. While there will be time for questions, no specific medical advice will be given, and due to the group format this is not technically a medical appointment. That being said, based on your insurance there may be out of network coverage for the Program. Ask our META coach for more information on this possibility.
Q: Do I have to be an established GladdMD patient?
A: No, the META Program was designed for GladdMD patients that do not need regular monitoring, but want to take their health to the next level or for those patients curious about where their health is, but do not need a full consultation. Because this will not be a personalized encounter, those with more specific health issues are better suited to go the route of an individual medical appointment before considering the META Program.
Q: Who is this program for?
A: The ideal META Program participant is anyone interested in assessing their level of health and risk of future health issues.
- Think your lifestyle is good and you're on track? The META Program is looking at deep genetic, biochemical, lipid and inflammatory markers along with body composition testing that no life insurance screening, health fair or conventional physician is looking into.
- Have you been working to improve upon your health? The META Program is the perfect tool to track success and gauge progress. Knowing what direction you're heading with good data is the only way to determine your future path.
- Is your health and/or your weight stuck? It's time to know exactly what your scale is telling you, and understand why. Dr. Gladd will help you put the big picture together and guide you to creating a path to improvement. Future META sessions will help you understand what is working and what is not.
Q: Do I need to fast before getting my labs drawn?
A: Yes, you will need to fast overnight for 12 hours before getting your labs drawn.
Q: Will there be follow up sessions?
A: Yes, the META Program will take place throughout the year. We will also offer various programs and opportunities to help you stay on track toward reaching your goals and keep your numbers in check.
BOD POD FAQs
Q: How does the BOD POD work?
A: The BOD POD system accurately measures body composition by determining body volume and body weight. Once those two variables are determined, body density can be computed and inserted into an equation to provide % fat measurements. Body weight is easily determined by the use of an accurate scale. Body volume is determined by applying the gas law (p1V1=p2V2), an expansion of Boyle’s Law, pV=c. The BOD POD measures volume by monitoring changes in pressure in a closed chamber. These pressure changes are achieved by oscillating a speaker mounted between the front testing chamber and a rear reference chamber, which causes complementary pressure changes in each chamber. The pressure changes are very small and are not noticed by the individual being tested.
Two measurements are performed to determine body volume. The volume of the subject chamber while empty is the first measurement taken by the BOD POD. The second measurement is the volume of the subject chamber with the subject inside. By subtraction, the volume of the subject is determined. Combined with the measurement of mass, the subject’s density is determined and subsequently their body composition is determined.
Q: How long does the BOD POD test take?
A: A BOD POD test can be accomplished in about 4 ½ minutes. The whole process is quick and easy. First the person is weighed. Then he or she enters the BOD POD and sits comfortably during two brief measurement periods of 50 seconds each. The process is quite easy and quick for the person being tested.
Q: What do I wear during my BOD POD test?
A: For best results, wear a bathing suit and swim cap. All air is not equally compressible. Air in contact with clothing and hair is more compressible than air that is not. Because the BOD POD technique relies on measuring small pressure changes, the use of a swim cap and bathing suit minimize the detrimental effects of the air during its compression. Therefore, minimal tight fitting clothing and a swim cap are necessary for accurate results.
Q: What does it feel like to be tested in the BOD POD?
A: The BOD POD is designed to be easy, fast, and accurate. The testing only requires that the individual being tested sits still and relaxes for two 50-second bouts of testing. Sounds of valves opening and closing and a fan may be heard during the testing procedure. However, no pressure changes will be felt and difficult breathing maneuvers are NOT required.
Q: How accurate is the BOD POD?
A: The BOD POD has been found to be as reliable and accurate as hydrostatic (underwater) weighing, long known as the industry’s “Gold standard” for measuring body composition. Statistically insignificant differences in body fat measurements (0.2%) found in comparison studies with underwater weighing establish the BOD POD as a precise means of measuring body composition. Other convenient means of body composition measurement such as bioelectrical impedance, anthropometry, and skinfold methods have been shown to produce larger differences in measurements when compared to underwater weighing.
