Why the Today trial failed

The headlines today will be that lifestyle does not dramatically enhance diabetes control in today's adolescents. It means, more medications and a quick jump to insulin for America's teens. Which means a life sentence of fatigue, weight gain, side effects and a general lack of realizing they have the potential to beat this disease themselves.

The reason why lifestyle change didn't move the needle? We are still promoting processed wheat, sugar and preservatives as the base of the food pyramid.

Until we get out of the calorie and fat gram counting mindset and into eating real, whole foods, this gets worse. And with our teens giving themselves insulin three times a day and taking meds that are known to compromise cardiovascular function, it gets a lot worse.
